Get Your Immune System In Shape

Even though we think of summer as a healthy time of year, germs are still everywhere.  Your grandchild who hugs you may have a cold.  That grocery store clerk who rang up your veggies may have just gotten over the stomach flu.  We never know when we will next become ill.

A great way to ensure that your body is ready to fight those germs off is to get your immune system in shape.  Here are some ways that you can do just that, according to nytimes.com:
Eat foods with antioxidants.  Antioxidants protect cells from molecules that can be damaging.  Common antioxidants are vitamins C, E, beta-carotene, and zinc.  To get what you need, regularly eat brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as kiwi, berries, oranges, apples, spinach and sweet potatoes.
Sleep well.  Studies show that we produce more antibodies when we get adequate amounts of sleep.  That means that we are better prepared to fight off a virus or bacteria if we sleep at least 6 hours a night.  So, put down your book and turn off the T.V. a little early to keep your immune system healthy.
Laugh.  Being stressed causes the release of hormones that can decrease our immune system’s fighting power.  A great way to combat stress is to laugh.  So go out with a good friend, catch a comedy show, or watch a funny video.  It will be fun and you’ll be healthier for it.
