The Gyrotonic Method

The gyrotonic expansion system is a cutting-edge movement system that addresses the entire body, incorporating principles of yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming, and tai-chi. Exercises are circular and three-dimensional, unlike other movement systems which tend to be linear and isolated. Each movement flows into the next, allowing joints to move naturally without any jarring or compression. The movement system is made up of two separate, but complementary methods: the gyrotonic method and the gyrokenesis method.

The gyrotonic method is an original and unique movement method that addresses the entire person, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and improving strength, and movement efficiency. Gyrotonic exercises are performed on machines, revolutionary in their design to function as an extension of your body.

Amy Pena

Amy Pena recently joined our wellness staff and is a licensed GYROTONIC(R) and GYROKINESIS(R) movement instructor. Amy was born and raised in the Chicago area and also has a Master’s degree in Linguistics. She was a former professional dancer and discovered the Gyrotonic movement system after a career-ending knee injury. Gyrotonic movement was the only system she found that did not cause her knee pain. She now devotes herself to helping others relieve their pain, strengthen their bodies and improve their overall well-being. She has been teaching this movement for over 10 years and has seen it change people’s bodies and increased their balance and mobility. We are so excited to have her a part of the wellness team and we know her knowledge and experience will benefit the wellness center.

Yoga

Originated in ancient India, Yoga typically means ‘union’ between the mind, body and spirit. It involves the practice of physical postures and poses, which is sometimes referred to as ‘asana’ in Sanskrit.

Yoga brings stability to the body and the wavering mind. It increases the lubrication of joints, ligaments and tendons of the body. Studies in the field of medicine suggest that Yoga is the only form of physical activity that provides complete exercise to the body, because it massages all the internal organs and glands.

Yoga is the perfect way to ensure overall health and physical fitness.

It is a medication without the actual use of medicines. Moreover, no visible side effects are associated with the practice of Yoga on a regular basis.

All you need to know is the most appropriate exercises meant for the structure of your body.

You need to know the right way of performing the asanas because any wrong attempt can cause injuries.

Yoga Benefits

Anti Aging

Yoga helps in slowing down the aging process by providing elasticity to the spine, firming up the skin, removing tension from the body, strengthening the abdominal muscles, eliminating the likelihood of a double chin, improving the quality of loose arm muscles, correcting poor posture and so on. Thus, of the numerous benefits of Yoga, anti-aging is an important one. All you need is patience and the determination to practice yoga.

Balance

Yoga creates symmetry throughout your body, making you stronger, flexible and improves your balance. Balance is referred not only to the sharp physical coordination but also to the balance between the left and right, front and back and high and low aspects of one’s body.

Flexibility

The result is enhanced fluidity throughout your body and a sense of ease and comfort. Apart from stretching the muscles, it also stretches the ligaments, tendons and the fascia sheath that surrounds the muscles. The best part of yoga is that it acts on the joints that were never really moved.

Mental Health

Yoga helps one develop a stronger state of mind, thus overcoming fears and preventing the dangers of anxiety. It helps reduce stress and creates a peaceful state of mind tackling depression

Stregnth

Regular stretching through yoga helps you improve your endurance and enhance your muscle’s ability to let go more efficiently without collapsing to the response of stretched tendons

Weight Reduction

Yoga directly influences the metabolism of the body by acting upon several hormonal secretions in the body. The deep breathing in yoga increases the oxygen intake to the cells of your body, including the fat cells which burn in contact of oxygen. Some of the Yoga asanas also help in weight control through stimulating lethargic thyroid glands for increasing their hormonal secretions, thus reducing weight.
