Talk about being in the right place at the right time! At a recent Arizona vs. Colorado baseball game an elderly woman caught a baseball without even trying. She was merely sitting in her seat, apparently reading, when a fly ball was hit into the stands. The ball misses her head by inches, and lands in her lap. This amazing event was caught on video and now has “gone viral” on the Internet. The video can be seen here on YouTube.
If an older adult is planning on going to a sports event this spring or summer, there are probably a few things to do to stay out of harm’s way…beyond just paying attention when a fly ball is hit!
First, talk with family or friends who are also attending the event to find a place to meet should you be separated. Sporting events bring hundreds of people together, making it easy to get separated. So have a plan.
Second, stay aware of the surroundings. Look for an exit close to your seat. Remember if you see a security guard or someone who works at the stadium that you could ask for help if needed. These details will be important should there be an emergency.
Third, take the usual precautions when being outside. Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially on hot days. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from damage. And don’t forget to bring the ever-important sunscreen.
So, have fun, enjoy the game, but keep your eyes open. You never know if you will end up with a baseball in your lap!
