Assisted Living May Not Be Right for You

If the time has come that living on your own is getting too difficult, you may be researching various options.  A common choice is moving into assisted living, but it isn’t for everyone.  Here are some ways to know that assisted living is not for you.

  1. You value your independence.  Living in an assisted living center can feel like your every move is predetermined.  Meals are only served at specific times, you can only take the shuttle to the store on certain days, and even social time is structured.
  2. You like having space.  Assisted living often has very small living spaces.  When you move into one, you may have to sacrifice most of your favorite furniture and belongings so that everything fits into your apartment.
  3. You’re on a budget.  The cost of assisted living centers is huge, and it’s only going up.  The average monthly cost is over $3,500 in the U.S.
  4. You like one-on-one care.  Assisted living centers are often understaffed and undertrained, a recent study revealed.  Seniors are getting the wrong medications and not getting the care that they need.  This nation-wide problem will take a long time to correct.

So, if you are not suited for assisted living, there are other options available to you. Freedom Home Care offers a variety of specialized in-home care for a range of needs from basic housekeeping to assistance getting around the house. Having in-home care can give you or your loved one independence, space, financial security, and  overall happiness.
